WHAT IS A REGISTERED DIETITIAN NUTRITIONIST (RDN)?

Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) are nationally-recognized food and nutrition experts who are uniquely qualified to provide medical nutrition therapy for specific disease conditions and general nutrition counseling for optimal health. Only an RDN is accredited and recognized by the US Government to provide nutrition services that are eligible for insurance reimbursement under the current health care laws. For more information refer to the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

WHAT IS A HEALTH AND WELLNESS COACH?

Health and Wellness Coaches are credentialed health, fitness, and mental health professionals (including dietitians, physical therapists, nurses, physicians, and behavioral health therapists) who combine evidence-based approaches for behavior change with their expert knowledge to assist their patients/clients to manage medical conditions and optimize all areas of well-being (physical activity, nutrition, weight, stress, and life satisfaction).

Health and Wellness coaches are trained practitioners of coaching psychology, which integrates the theories of positive psychology (the scientific study of happiness and well-being) into evidence-based methods for facilitating behavior change. For more information visit the International Consortium for Health & Wellness Coaching.

DOES INSURANCE COVER MY VISIT?

All Great Nutrition is in-network with Aetna Healthcare and Blue Cross Blue Shield. However, many PPO plans offer out-of-network benefits that may reimburse you for nutrition counseling from a RDN of your choice even if you do not have Aetna or Blue Cross. Coverage and reimbursement will depend on several factors including your specific plan benefits, medical diagnosis, and if your coaching session is in-person or video chat. Note that insurance only reimburses sessions held in New York.

If you are using insurance to pay for your visit, please note that it is your responsibility to contact your insurance company about benefits and eligibility, payment, and fees for nutrition counseling. Your insurance is a contract between you and your insurance carrier and does not guarantee payment for nutrition services. All Great Nutrition cannot become involved in disputes regarding claims, deductibles, co-payments, non-covered charges, or other denials of payment. If you have any questions regarding your insurance coverage, please direct them to your insurance representative.

HOW DO I FIND OUT WHAT MY INSURANCE BENEFITS ARE FOR NUTRITION COUNSELING?

Below are great questions to ask your insurance company to see if you have in-network and out-of-network benefits for nutrition counseling:

1. Does my plan cover in-network (or out-of-network) benefits for outpatient nutrition counseling (CPT Code: 97802)?

  • If yes, how many sessions are allowed per plan year?

  • Do I have preventative benefits for nutrition counseling?

  • Does my plan cover diagnosis code Z71.3 with CPT code 97802? If yes, how many sessions are allowed per plan year?

2. Does my plan only cover medical nutrition therapy visits that are considered “medically necessary”?

3. Do I have a deductible to meet first? If yes, how much?

4. Do I need a physician referral? If so, the physician referral must be brought to the initial appointment or emailed.

5. What is my co-pay or co-insurance amount for outpatient nutrition counseling?

6. Ask for the reference number for this phone call. Mark the date and time.

WHAT ARE YOUR FEES AND HOW MUCH DO YOUR PACKAGES COST?

Please contact us for questions about individual session and package fees for self-pay options.

WHAT IF I WANT TO CANCEL MY SESSION?

In the event that you are unable to keep an appointment, you must notify your nutritionist/coach at least 48-business hours in advance of your appointment so we can offer your appointment slot to someone else. If such advance notice is not received, you will be financially responsible for the session you missed. Please note that insurance companies do not reimburse for missed sessions and you will be charged a session fee of $75.00 if you cancel less than 48-business hours to your session. There is flexibility for emergencies.
